Local Inspiration

There will be a piece of art inspired by Charles Burrell on display at The Burrell, thanks to a partnership with Model Metal - a local company founded by Mitch Hoffman and David Brann.

A key mission of the development has been to engage with the community and work with local artists, and we are delighted to see how this piece is taking shape over the course of the construction process!

I am the lead artist on an art railing that was recently completed for a 100% affordable condo project in RiNo, called the Burrell. The developer, Shanahan Development, reached out to me to create a unique railing design for their below-market rate condo project.

We ended up deciding to represent legendary Denver Jazz musician Charles Burrell, who lived in Five Points and was the first black member of a symphony orchestra in America. We used a CNC plasma cutter to make 152 unique panels picturing Mr. Burrell's visage 70 feet tall, along with his favorite song, Tea for Two by Doris Day. Mr. Burrell is still alive, now 103 years old, and was able to attend the opening of the building a few weeks ago!

We believe this is a unique take on the 'slap a mural on it' element of design that is extremely common in RiNo.

- Artist, Mitch Hoffman -

Our team, Model Metal, consists of Mitch Hoffman (owner), Katy McClure (fabrication), and David Brann (design). Sadly, David passed away at the beginning of this year, but he was the brainchild of this project and it stands as a legacy to him and his vision.
